Ganesha, the beloved elephant-headed Hindu god, is often seen sitting on a lotus flower in images and statues. The lotus flower is an important symbol in both Hinduism and Buddhism and is closely associated with Ganesha. Its meaning varies somewhat between the two religions, but in both, it symbolizes purity, spiritual growth, and divine beauty.

In Hinduism, the lotus is associated with the Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity, good fortune, and beauty. According to Hindu mythology, Lakshmi was born from a lotus flower, and her divine beauty is reflected in this flower's petals.

The lotus can thus be seen as a symbol of beauty and prosperity, and it's no wonder that Ganesha is often depicted sitting upon one. It reflects his role as the remover of obstacles and the bestower of good fortune.

In Buddhism, the lotus is a symbol of spiritual awakening and enlightenment. The flower rises from the murky depths of a pond to bloom in the sun, and this is a metaphor for the spiritual journey of the soul. It is believed that those who are spiritually enlightened can reach a state of Nirvana or perfect bliss.

For this reason, the lotus is often associated with the Buddha and is seen as a symbol of spiritual freedom.  By sitting on the lotus, Ganesha is often said to represent the perfect balance between spiritual awakening and worldly success. In this way, the image of Ganesha seated on a lotus flower symbolizes the importance of both spiritual enlightenment and worldly success in Hinduism and Buddhism.
